Recently on public radio station KQED, a broadcast of Peter Greenberg’s address to the Commonwealth Club was aired.  Mr. Greenberg was promoting his book “Don’t Go There” which is a sort of antithesis to Patricia Schultz’s “1000 Places to See Before You Die”.  Peter Greenberg may be a widely respected travel editor and author (click here for his bio), but I didn’t know how funny and engaging he was until I heard him speak.  During his presentation to the Commonwealth Club, he revealed a wealth of travel tips and attitudes, some of which I plan to adopt immediately.  I feel the subject matter and substance of Mr. Greenberg’s address was powerful and highly relevant to the adventure traveler, so I requested the permission of the Commonwealth Club to present the full audio of his address here.  With gracious thanks, you may listen to this audio file by clicking below:

Have you ever walked around tired, not having acquired quite enough sleep because you were so into a book you kept reading well past bedtime? Some books are hard to put down. I find this to be the case with epic adventure author Terry Brooks, who in my judgment is the finest adventure fiction writer there is.

Terry Brooks is an author who develops vivid characters and intricate plots woven around thrilling, suspenseful action.  The settings for  his books are fantasy lands where there always seems to be evil brewing, threatening, looking for a place or way to flourish.  Races of trolls, elves, dwarves, gnomes, and humans form allegiances, wage war, and struggle for peace or dominance.  The action involves a council of Druids, dedicated to the study of magic and the assistance of all races.  But where magic and power exist, so too does temptation and subversion.  Some Druids forsake their oath to benefit society and instead lust for their own power, stopping at nothing. Inevitably, the theme is repeated time and again, the struggle between good and evil.  As a reader of these chronicles, it is fascinating to get caught up in Terry Brook’s world of epic quests, dangerous voyages, powerful magic and raw treachery.  Once involved in a Terry Brooks novel, it is almost impossible to set the book down.
